I was so nervous that my hands shook. The excitement of being here made it hard to be patient. Only the Olympics might compare in extravagance and anticipation.
The Temple towered above the city. Gold and marble decorated the sacred walls, and massive columns surrounded the temple mount. How had Herod the Great, the ignoble, degenerate dastard that he was, been motivated to undertake such a massive building project? The construction took decades, almost unprecedented in any century.
