After watching this video, you might wonder, “Who is Bill Cooper?” I did a little research because, while his name was familiar to me, I couldn’t remember who he was.
Why am I posting a video by someone I don’t know much about and who many consider a conspiracy nut: Bill is a complicated figure who died in a shootout with the police in 2001, so while controversial, what he said resonated with me. I felt convicted when watching the video—enough to share it.
The News Media
I remember when I first began providing television captioning after working as a court reporter for 20 years. The best thing about captioning news was that I felt my writing had value. I could help hearing-impaired people “hear” the news with the same precision as those who actually heard the anchor or reporter. I began captioning the news in 1998, six years after this interview.
I also could never have imagined, when I began captioning local news shows, what I would learn about the media. I had no idea in those early years that the news was controlled by five companies owned by multibillionaires. It’s not what you think. My first hint was when I found myself writing the same news stories verbatim on multiple news stations. I’d write a story for a small East Coast news station, and then three hours later, I’d write the same story verbatim for a West Coast news station. That bothered me. It didn’t make sense—unless they were getting their information from the same source.
Call it ignorance, but back then, I trusted the news anchors, and I found great joy in what I was doing, especially after the grueling 20 years I spent working as a court reporter, writing “biting” words between adversaries, where the only ones who won were the attorneys.
To be honest, I hated it. It seemed like the most important thing was not justice, but money. Perhaps the criminal system worked better in those days, but that is under attack now, too. It’s not what it once was, but it’s still better than every other system in the world. After all, we live in a fallen world, so why do we expect justice?
I believe it’s because God created us in His image, and He cares about those things. So, if we are Christians, we should, too. But as Jesus said, a student is not above his master. Jesus was crucified as an innocent man, and there is no justice in that—except, and this is what’s important—without His mercy, we would all have been doomed to hell. He received an unjust punishment, so we could receive an undeserved pardon. Is that fair?
The point is, there is a higher power, a higher authority, a higher control. Unfortunately, I think Bill Cooper succumbed to his own paranoia in his attempt to “awaken” the masses to the deception and lies that permeate society, then and now.
This hit me broadside at the Capitol “insurrection” on January 6. I could not believe it when I returned to my hotel that evening and saw what the news reported about an event I had just witnessed. I was shocked as I sat in front of the TV. I was more than shocked. I was speechless. That’s not what happened; they are misrepresenting the facts, they are lying, they are … insert your own words.
I was determined to set the record straight. I put together a video of the event with no commentary and one Bible verse at the beginning of the reel: Isaiah 5:20 (NIV): “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.”
I posted my video on my YouTube channel, and within a few days, I had 1,000 views, but YouTube took it down for violating community guidelines. Which guideline? I shot the video at the event site, with no commentary, some background music, and one Bible verse.
That was the day I “woke up.” That was when I realized the media was lying about many things. I began to doubt the truthfulness of most of what I heard, including friends and church people. I eventually had to leave my church. I was removed from my prayer group of over 15 years. The Haitian children I supported through the church were taken from me. I was threatened not to talk to people in the church about anything that would be divisive. I was blasted in an email for “bad behavior.” Some even questioned my salvation.
Gone was my innate ability to trust those in authority, particularly those with spiritual authority, because of their self-righteousness. I felt like everyone had lost their minds, not to mention COVID. The censorship I experienced was beyond comprehension. My tweets were removed, my Twitter account was frozen, thousands of my followers disappeared, Facebook censored me, and even my oncologist chastised me for not taking the COVID shot.
But I HAD DONE my research, as Bill Cooper says. I was no longer “asleep at the wheel.” And then the real decision to quit captioning news came when I was convicted by the Holy Spirit that I was writing lies, and I knew it, and money was more important to me than truth. I could no longer caption news stories, so I quit.
The Sports Media
I told myself, “I’ll just caption sports,” and that’s what I did. It wasn’t easy. I had to work difficult hours, often in the middle of the night, covering soccer and rugby on the other side of the world, to pay the bills.
But at least I wasn’t writing lies. Everybody I captioned was happy. No politics, no controversy, no compromise. While I did write all kinds of sports, some were more politically charged than others. Among the worst was NBA basketball, where “Black Lives Matter” was prominently displayed on basketball courts and featured in commercials and player commentary during commercial breaks. They would say things I didn’t agree with philosophically, but at least they weren’t presented as truth by doctors and news reporters. They were opinions of famous sports icons, like LeBron James and Steph Curry.
I was saddened by some of the things I wrote, words spoken by players I greatly admired. I would have preferred, as I like to say, “for them to stay in their lane.” But we live in a free country, and they had every right to express their own personal views even if I or others might disagree.
But here is what Bill Cooper said in this video that got to me. I captioned only sports to escape the lies, the deception, and what I perceived as America’s downfall. I didn’t want to think about those things. I didn’t want to be part of that world. I wanted to think “happy thoughts,” and write “happy stories.”
The bread and circuses of Roman times, where the Roman regime oppressed the people it ruled, forcing slavery on those it conquered, that same mindset still exists today. It’s just called by different names. The Roman rulers placated the masses with chariot races and lions that killed innocent victims in the coliseum, and other perverted forms of entertainment to keep the masses distracted from the true agenda. I never made the connection that we are doing the same thing in our wide world of sports.
People watch the games to escape the reality of a broken system. That system does nothing to build up its citizens or offer hope. Uncertainty is the most certain thing we have. As war rages in the Middle East, we are left to wonder: are those missiles going to invade our airspace next time?
Ironically, I’ve suddenly been thrust back into captioning Fox News because sports captioning is increasingly being done by A.I. I am being replaced, becoming a dinosaur clinging precariously to a profession I’ve enjoyed for almost 30 years. My days as a broadcast captioner are coming to an end. When Fox News decides to use A.I. for captioning, I’ll probably sell my stenograph machine and shut down my captioning computer one last time.
After 50 years of court reporting and broadcast captioning, it’s a sad way to end a long career. But I suppose if it “woke” me up to the reality of what we are facing in a world on the brink of a nuclear holocaust, Islamic ideology, and Marxism, maybe it’s a good thing. I will write books to my heart’s content, living on a pauper’s wage and Social Security. But there are worse things in life this side of paradise.
And what is that, you might ask? Giving in, giving up, refusing to take off the blinders, not speaking out, not shouting from the mountaintops that Jesus is the answer. As Bill Cooper said, “Do your own research. Don’t believe anything anyone says.”
I will add, do it soon, while we still have the internet, before Christian books become outlawed, and before everything you read and listen to will be so heavily monitored that you will fear for your safety.
Don’t think it can happen? Look at China. I support a teacher in China who has to guard everything she says, even here in America. “They” are listening.
Follow-Up Thoughts
As I finish this post, I want to add one more thing. As it happened in 1991 when I was in Israel at the start of the Gulf War, ambassadors are called home before the first shots are fired. The United States called its ambassadors home in February 2026 before the start of the current Middle East War. I knew when I heard that announcement, whatever shots were fired, they wouldn’t be warning shots; they would be the real thing.
As I think about what lies ahead, I believe God will call His ambassadors home through the rapture before nuclear war breaks out. We know it’s soon, even if we don’t know the day.
Please, don’t take my word for anything. Do your own research. Wake up. Seek the Lord while He can still be found in Christian books, Christian websites, YouTube videos, Bible-believing churches, men, and women filled with the Holy Spirit. A day is coming when that won’t be true. Amos 8:12 (NLT) tells us that “People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from border to border searching for the word of the LORD, but they will not find it.”
That day may be sooner than we think. Remember, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, died for all of us. Repent and be born again. Then, no matter how dark things become, God will keep you in peace.
While I appreciate, on the one hand, Bill Cooper’s prophetic words in the above video, I’m not sure he was a Christian. He relied on his own resources instead of the Holy Spirit to subdue the impending evil that wrapped its tentacles around him. None of us is strong enough, smart enough, or holy enough to defeat the powers of darkness without the Holy Spirit. Call on the Lord, and He will answer you. We are in a fight of major proportions, but in the end, we know who wins.
