The Donkey and the King

Remarkable story with positive Christian values. Loved the illustrations. It’s a hit with my kids!

Book Love

Nerlande learned she loved reading. She had been imagining her own stories. Now she could read them in books. She could learn new things, like the puppy in the story who grew up to be a “seeing-eye dog” for a blind person.

Author’s Note to Parents

One of my fondest memories as an author is reading The Donkey and the King to a young Sunday school class. The kids stayed afterward to find the “good” hidden on every page. As an ebook on Kindle, the drawings can be enlarged to aid in searching for the hidden word, and the font can be increased for easier reading.

Book Love is based on my own life. However, I wrote it as fiction, which allowed me to craft a compelling story for young readers.

One day, I was sick and had to stay home from school with a sore throat. We only had a radio to listen to, which became boring after a while. My school books lay beside me on my bed, and one of them was my reader from school.

I opened it and began reading out of boredom. The first story I read, lying on my bed sick with a sore throat, was about a young boy who took care of a Golden Retriever puppy. When the dog was old enough, he attended a boarding school to receive training to assist people who were blind.

The story changed my life. That’s when I fell in love with reading, marking the beginning of my reading and writing passion over the last seven decades. I dedicated Book Love to a little girl I sponsor in Haiti, who wrote to me that she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up, and her favorite subject was reading.

Reading opens doors. Even a well-lived life can’t learn everything experientially. We need to read about people, animals, history, science — and, I must add, the Bible.

History is much more interesting when we read it through the lens of people’s lives. Science is more memorable when we read it through the eyes of a scientist. Art, music, and writing come alive to young minds when they can see it through the words of a storyteller who excites the reader with tales he won’t soon forget.

It might be a heart-thumping thriller, a thought-provoking adventure, or a dramatic story of war and peace featuring villains and heroes. Stories like these can be told in ways that teach great lessons that will stay with the child into adulthood.

In my case, not only did I fall in love with reading, but I also developed a passion for people who are blind and how seeing-eye dogs can help individuals with visual disabilities. Jesus is our role model. He told incredible stories that the four Gospel writers recorded for our benefit and enjoyment.

Reading challenges young minds to think analytically. It’s more than just reading words on a page. It presents them with new information where they must ask questions, anticipate outcomes, understand and retain information, plot out a story in terms of structure (life has structure), and develop a relationship with the book’s characters. These stories become foundational for learning about relationships, fostering empathy toward others, and allowing the reader to grow vicariously through tall tales and true stories.

Even if a child struggles with the process, don’t give up. I failed the first grade. Perhaps that makes reading more precious to me because if I had not read that one story by an unknown author in a third-grade reading book, I might not have developed my love for reading.

With God, it’s always about the timing. And we never know when that dramatic day will come for your little one. So enjoy the journey, make memories, and trust God.
