Love Your Characters
A recent event came to mind where I misjudged someone’s comment. Fortunately, it bothered me enough that I mentioned it to my daughter, who promptly clarified my misunderstanding. I was thankful she did, and later wondered how many times I had misjudged someone without knowing it.
As a fictional writer, it’s essential to understand the inner workings of even the most bastard character. The psychology of being is at the core of every living thing and crucial to what makes each individual unique. If we want to create believable characters, we should understand what makes them tick, do something foolish, or surprise the reader, but to truly love them? I am not sure I can do that. Perhaps I can love getting to know them better as I create them, but I don’t know if I have the power of Dickens to love my antagonistic characters the way he did.
