A Young Adult Fantasy
Many years ago, when I was a pre-teen, I checked out an unusual book from the library. The name of the book I’ve long forgotten, but when I began reading it, I discovered that what I thought the book was about was different from my preconceived notion. A time interval existed. The time disconnect blew me away, and I was hooked. I couldn’t put the book down.
I’ve always had a penchant for reading books about time. Once, I read a book about a young girl (again, I don’t remember the name of the book) who wanted to grow up too fast. She aged more quickly than the world around her, and what she wanted was different from what she received because of her impatience. I don’t remember how it ended, but books that present a unique concept about time and place fascinate me.
The same can be said for some of my favorite books that were later made into movies: The Time Machine, by H.G. Wells, and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle.
The original Star Trek Series featured several episodes that explored time warps, time travel, and multi-dimensional universes. One was The City on the Edge of Forever. Another one was about Captain Kirk and the crew becoming infected with an aging disease and almost dying. A third interesting episode featured “aliens” who visited the Enterprise, who lived in a dimension where time ticked faster. Whenever the “aliens” made an appearance, the ship’s crew heard something that sounded like a fly buzzing around them.
Original ideas like the ones above open my mind to possibilities. I love the creativity of originality, especially when “eternal truths” are woven into the stories. One Star Trek episode even presented the idea of “a chosen religious leader” whose “appearance” was spreading throughout the universe hundreds of years after our time (the period of the Star Trek Series).
When I look at Hollywood, it’s impressive that a Jewish producer (Gene Roddenberry) and at least two Jewish actors (William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy) embraced the story’s premise, which I recognized at twelve years old as an indirect reference to Jesus.
The Eighth Dimension: Frequency is a book of that kind. The reader may not understand what’s going on until he reads book two (sorry, there’s too much happening to rush through it). The journey is what’s important.
I asked myself why, in some of my favorite books, I never read the last chapter. Perhaps the author held on a little too long. After all, when you get to the end of a story that you’ve invested hundreds of hours writing, it’s hard to let go.
The answer to that dilemma is to write a sequel. Readers who wish to continue can proceed to the next book. I envision the Eighth Dimension as a three-book series. However, as I shared with a friend at church recently, it’s hard for me to condense things into paragraphs. That’s why I write books. Perhaps that will change when I begin writing book two and God reveals ideas to me that require more paragraphs to convey their meaning. I have a few more chapters to write in Eighth Dimension: Frequency, so I don’t want to look too far ahead.
My women’s Bible study is reading Randy Alcorn’s book 50 Days of Heaven. I want to quote something he wrote: “‘In the words of Francis Schaeffer, ‘The Christian is the really free man—he is free to have imagination. This, too, is our heritage. The Christian is the one whose imagination should fly beyond the stars.” Alcorn adds, “Thank you, God, for the gift of imagination.”
I completed the Seventh Dimension Series in 2019. So, it’s been six years since I wrote the last book in the series, The Howling. The question I asked was: Can I write another series? God has given me an unbelievable imagination that I perceive He wants me to use for His glory. Does God have another series for me to write? He gave me the answer in the Eighth Dimension book idea.
Eighth Dimension: Frequency covers mysteries in the Bible that raise questions about time and place. As Westerners, we tend to think of time as linear. However, from a Biblical point of view, time is circular. Of course, God is outside of time, so when did time begin? Why and how? I address these questions in a manner that the reader will likely find shocking.
The characters are the same, but the protagonist is not Shale but Chumana Ironvein. She was a villain in the Seventh Dimension Series. However, as often happens in real life, we form false impressions about people based on innuendo. Once the reader gets to know Chumana, his perceptions will change.
The Eighth Dimension is about deception. The reader will discover that some things he might have perceived as the truth throughout his life differ from what the Bible says. For those who have never believed in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, I hope to inspire them to ponder what the Bible says and search the Scriptures for answers. It is the Truth (Jesus Christ) that sets us free (John 8:32). Is the reader willing to consider the imponderable?
The Eighth Dimension dives head-on into these complex subjects. As a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, the Bible is my foundation for all the mysteries about which I write. The most relevant Scripture in the Eighth Dimension Series is Revelation 22:13-15 (NIV): “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
