I originally wrote this for the book I’m currently working on, Eighth Dimension – Counterfeit. Later, God gave me a different story to use, so I adapted it into a devotional. In hindsight, I see this as a revelation worth sharing.

A Bible Miracle Short Story

Based on 2 Kings 6:1-7

Elijah and Elisha Go To Jordan River
A Bible-Miracle Short Story

It was as if I stepped into the pages of another world when I arrived at the Jordan River. The banks of the world’s most famous waterway were lush with trees, vines, and spectacular exotic plants, making it a revered place in the harsh desert. I joined a group of seminarians gathered around the Prophet Elisha.

The ministry of Elisha had grown significantly despite the wickedness of Israel’s kings, and they needed to expand their workspace to accommodate the young prophets in training. They now numbered more than a hundred, and they had chosen this area for their new base.

Many had come with ax heads and other necessary supplies. As I watched, the men were cutting down trees. I could hear the iron axes striking the tree trunks, and I felt the impact as the trees fell to the ground.

Suddenly, an ax head tumbled into the water. One of the young men cried out in anguish, “Oh, my lord! It was borrowed!”

Elisha, the Prophet and man of God, asked, “Where did it fall?”

The student pointed to the location where the water flowed rapidly.

Elisha cut a stick and threw it into the Jordan River. Suddenly, the iron ax head floated to the surface.

“Lift it out,” the Prophet commanded.

The bereft man retrieved the ax head as it surfaced in the river. Shocked and relieved, everyone praised God.

When you think about it, life is full of short stories. Some of us may be unfamiliar with the story in 2 Kings 6:1–7. It’s a “short story” nestled among the more spectacular stories of Elisha, and it’s easy to skim past it.

While the miracle might be easy to overlook, to that young man, it was his life. He would have had to replace it, which would have required him to leave his training as a prophet, go to work, and earn the money to buy a new one.

Whether it’s a big miracle or a small one, God cares about every detail of our lives. Those bits and pieces can become significant in the grand scheme of things, and often we don’t realize that at the time.

Modern-Day Miracle Short Story

A Modern-Day Miracle Short Story

I want to share a recent news story that most people will be familiar with. On July 13, 2024, at 6:11 p.m. EDT, in Butler, Pennsylvania, a shooter fired several rounds from a nearby rooftop at an open-air campaign rally, killing one man and nearly assassinating President Trump.

The bullet grazed President Trump’s ear. If he had not turned his head at the last second, the bullet would have had more devastating consequences; in my opinion, it would have killed him.

I do not doubt that God saved Trump’s life that day. I don’t know whether Trump is a believer. I hope he is, but only God knows for sure. However, God is using Trump for His purposes, whether he realizes it or not. Suppose Trump had died and Kamala Harris had won the election; would she have been willing to launch an offensive with Israel into Iran to destroy its nuclear capability?

Israel is a small country, about the size of New Jersey. North to south, the nation is 290 miles long, and east to west, at its broadest point, only 85 miles wide. I have heard that Iran was only weeks away from achieving full nuclear capability to launch up to ten nuclear warheads. Given Israel’s small size, only three to five nukes would be needed to obliterate the country.

Think about that for a minute. It’s mind-boggling—millions of people dead in an hour. Four million people live in Tel Aviv, which is half of Israel’s population. I don’t think we can fully grasp the devastation that would have occurred, since we have never seen anything like it in our lifetime.

The reality is that God is not done with Israel. He has a plan for them, and despite all the anti-Semitism and hatred toward the Jews, they remain the apple of God’s eye. Deuteronomy 32:8-10 (NLT) says:

“When the Most High assigned lands to the nations, when he divided up the human race, he established the boundaries of the peoples according to the number in his heavenly court. For the people of Israel belong to the LORD; Jacob is his special possession. He found them in a desert land, in an empty, howling wasteland. He surrounded them and watched over them; he guarded them as he would guard his own eyes.”

For the Davidic Covenant (2 Samuel 7:16, NIV) to be fulfilled, Israel must survive.

“Your house and your kingdom [Israel] will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.”

God saved President Trump’s life so he could prevent Iran from launching nuclear weapons against Israel. Otherwise, if Israel were destroyed by a nuclear holocaust, the Davidic Covenant could not be fulfilled.

Wars and Prayer, Jesus in clouds

SECOND POINT

Secondly, if Israel is decimated as a nation, the Ezekiel War described in chapters 38 and 39 of Ezekiel can’t happen. When this takes place—exactly when, we don’t know—Israel is at peace and has become wealthy. According to many scholars, including Dr. Chuck Missler, a coalition of nations, including Turkey, Russia, and Iran, comes down from the North to take the “spoils.”

We know every prophecy in the Bible is fulfilled, so Israel must exist as a nation for this prophecy to come true. I don’t believe it’s that far off. We know from Scripture that God wins. No one comes to Israel’s rescue—not even the United States, historically Israel’s staunchest ally.

THIRD POINT

A third point is worth noting: Jesus said He would not return until the Israeli leadership acknowledged Him as their Savior. Matthew 23:39 (NIV) states: “For I tell you [leadership], you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

If Satan can keep Israel from acknowledging that Jesus is their Messiah, then Jesus will never return. If there is no Israel, the nation can’t pray for Jesus to save its people.

Because of Israel’s precarious position in the Middle East, surrounded by enemies who want to destroy it, and the worldwide hatred toward Jews, Israel’s very existence is a miracle. After wandering among the nations for almost two thousand years, ridiculed, harassed, and murdered, the Jews were restored to their ancestral land in 1948. No other nation in the history of the planet can claim that miraculous feat.

God will do whatever it takes to ensure Israel’s survival. President Trump recently said that, without him, Israel would have been wiped off the face of the globe. I believe Trump is right, but I cringe every time he says things like that because the President is taking credit for God’s Good Works. Israel exists because of God. God used Trump to protect Israel from being nuked.

MIRACLES

Whether we give God the credit or not, He is in the business of miracles. He specializes in them. I am a miracle. I should have died at two years old after drinking poison, but God had a purpose for me and saved my life. Chances are, God has kept you alive for a reason. He has a purpose for you, too.

Some miracles might seem insignificant, like Elisha raising an ax head to the surface of the Jordan River. But to the man who borrowed it, it was huge. God kept his future intact so he could serve the God he loved. Stories like the floating ax head encourage us. For three thousand years, millions have been blessed reading his story.

I encourage you to reflect on the miracles God has done in your life and thank him. Not once, not twice, not three times, but seventy times seven. I take that number from Jesus’ remark to Peter when Peter asked how many times he needed to forgive a brother who had sinned against him (Matthew 18:21-22).

God wants us to be thankful in all things. I believe the more thankful we are, the more miracles God will perform. Instead of seeing coincidences, we’ll see God’s Good Works even in the mundane. God cares about those things, too. Something very ordinary may become extraordinary. Even though we don’t know the future, we can claim Romans 8:28.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Even at this late hour, in 2026. God is still doing miracles, and for that I am thankful.
