BOOK REVIEWS
I loved being able to buy all these books together in one set. Not only did I personally enjoy each one, but the set will be a great pass-along to my nieces and nephews. Beginning with The Door, this speculative young adult series grabs the reader’s attention from the start with likable main characters, some charming animals, and plenty of action in each book.
It all begins with Shale Snyder following a dog through a door that leads to a mysterious garden. Using creative symbolism, rich allegory, vivid imagery and gifted storytelling, the author takes us from the real world to Biblical times to places in between.
From beginning to end, this is a story of hope, forgiveness, faith, love, friendship, and courage. I like watching Shale and Daniel mature through the series, both internally and in their relationship. There is never a shortage of conflicts and challenges, with each chapter ending with a nudge to keep on reading. Just as the Bible is full of conflict, drama, betrayal, courage, love, war, and hope, so too is this fascinating series. And…it will keep you thinking about your own mortality, how you’re spending your brief time on Earth, and what happens next.

Gripping. This set is filled with action and drama. It is historical fiction, sci-fi fantasy, and time travel all in one! I really enjoyed it and appreciated the Christian worldview. This whole series has nearly nonstop action throughout!
The Door starts out in Shale’s modern-day Atlanta, but quickly shifts to the 7th Dimension.
The King and The Castle take place in and around the city of Jerusalem relative to the crucifixion of Jesus. Shale quickly becomes a believer in Yeshua as Messiah, but Daniel struggles with all the issues present day secular Jews struggle with.
He sees the events leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection with his own eyes and puts them alongside what he knows from his Hebrew studies, his family and friends from modern times, his own reading of the Bible; it creates a unique dilemma of faith. He learns forgiveness firsthand and is almost immediately tested.
Woven through the story is the thread of a repeated dream or vision of his father who disappeared. Finding him becomes Daniel’s quest.
Characters & Setting: Characters were well developed. In addition to Shale and Daniel, you meet Romans, Arabs, lepers, religious leaders, a compassionate doctor, and ordinary everyday people trying to survive and make a living. You will meet strange spiritual beings, talking animals and see it all through the eyes of Shale, a run-away teen, feeling abandoned and isolated, and Daniel, a modern, secular Jewish pre-med student who along with Shale, was transported into the times of Christ—a time before modern technology. It portrays the struggles secular Jews have with believing that Jesus could ever be the long-awaited Messiah.
Themes teens relate to:
• unfairness
• injustice
• not listening and/or not taking people seriously
• the struggle to believe when your culture and training have taught you not to
Writing Craft: Vivid imagery in her writing, creates mental images that stay with the reader. She did an excellent job incorporating the teachings of Jesus into the resolution of Shale’s problems. Well plotted!
Recommendations: This is a set that I could recommend to teens interested in fantasy, who are dealing with similar issues as those Shale encountered, or faith issues such as Daniel faced. I would recommend it to anyone struggling with intellectual issues with Jesus or persons who struggle against the pull of their culture.
I would also recommend it to adults/parents of troubled teens to help give them an understanding from a teen perspective.
CAROL A. BROWN, AUTHOR AND AMAZON READER
The Seventh Dimension Series Mini Box Set includes The Door, The King, and The Castle, the first three books in the six-book young adult fantasy series, which has won over thirty-five book awards.
“Time is an illusion until God’s appointed time,” is the central theme based on A.W. Tozer’s quote in The Pursuit of God: “A spiritual kingdom lies all about us, enclosing us, embracing us, altogether within reach of our inner selves, waiting for us to recognize it. God Himself is here waiting our response to His Presence. This eternal world will come alive to us the moment we begin to reckon upon its reality.”
The protagonists are coming-of-age young adults taken via supernatural stargates into the violent, unpredictable world of the seventh dimension. Shale Snyder, an American, and Daniel Sperling, an Israeli, meet in the seventh dimension—a reality outside of time. Their love for each other is conflicted by their opposing spiritual beliefs, which seem irreconcilable. While I wrote this series for young adults, all readers will enjoy the deeper, profound truths that can only be learned from a life well-lived.
Allegory, foreshadowing, and symbolism weave a story of intrigue, and the heroism of the two protagonists is meant to inspire the reader. Love and forgiveness are virtues that both protagonists must learn.
Spiritual warfare is a recurring theme, and special gifts given to Shale and Daniel make the story come alive with meaning beyond the reality we see. These gifts enable the reader to discover eternal truths that will impact the upcoming Eighth Dimension.
An unexamined life can squander the opportunity to be redeemed. What a waste. My goal is to make the reader think, ask questions, and consider the most important question of all—where will he spend eternity? “Time is an illusion until God’s appointed time.” You may not have tomorrow. What will you do today?
