Almost half of the population in Nigeria is Christian, which amounts to around 80 million people. Nigeria is listed as one of the top countries in the world for Christian martyrdom. Nigeria also has the largest Christian population in Africa. We need to be praying for the Nigerian Christians.
Unfortunately, in the West, if it doesn’t affect us directly, we tend to ignore it, but we must tune into the cries of our brothers and sisters in Christ on the other side of the world. When I say “tune into,” that means we need to be on the same frequency as the Holy Spirit and listen with our hearts. God wants us to pray for them and remember their sufferings.
According to Nairaland.com, the name “Abia, ” which is the name of one of the states in Nigeria, is mentioned 30 times in the Bible. Abia means “Yahweh Is My Father” or “My Father is Lord”.
I received a recent email from Jordan Sekulow with ACLJ (American Center for Law and Justice), and I quote part of it here:
“Every day, 35 Nigerian Christians are executed by Islamic radicals. That’s 7,000 believers martyred every year for their faith in Nigeria alone.
“In just hours, we are taking urgent action to defend dying Christians.
“Just days ago, six Christians were slaughtered in a nighttime attack as families went to bed – capping off a summer of horror. The summer began with a June massacre of 200 believers when infants, toddlers, and the elderly were murdered and thrown into fires. Fleeing victims were shot.
“A local church leader describes the situation as “a church under Islamist extermination.”
“Nigerian Christians are being slaughtered while their own government looks the other way. This unchecked evil demands action.
“Today, we’re delivering an oral intervention at the U.N. Human Rights Council on behalf of persecuted Christians in Nigeria. We are exerting unceasing pressure on Nigeria’s president to protect Christians and prove he is not complicit in the killing.”
According to Vatican News, 52,2550 Nigerian Christians have been murdered since 2009. Eighteen thousand churches have been set on fire. And here in America, we watch our sports, go to movies, and live a comfortable Christianity. And I’m including myself in that category. But something caught my attention, so I’m writing this post.
My website tells me where visitors are coming from. Most of my visitors are from the United States, which didn’t surprise me, but the second country did: Nigeria. Why, I wonder, are so many visitors coming to my website from Nigeria?
My website is a Christian website. They are visiting LorilynRoberts.com to read and be encouraged in the Lord. So please pray for these Christians, who are our brothers and sisters in Christ, who are dying by the thousands because they believe in Jesus Christ. I truly believe that kind of persecution will come to America, and perhaps we’ve already seen the beginning of it with the martyrdom of Charlie Kirk.
Please join me in prayer. Set aside a few minutes each day to remember them and pray for them. Pray for their strength in the Lord, their steadfastness, and that in their deaths, they will be a witness to the rest of us, so their deaths will not be in vain. Pray that even now, we can hear their cries across the ocean. Please leave a comment to encourage them. They need to know we are remembering them and praying for them.
Below are a few Bible verses that speak to Nigeria’s witness to the rest of the world. May we be bold here in America in our witness as we remember what the Christians in Nigeria are enduring. May Charlie Kirk’s death ignite the same kind of passion for Christ that the Christian Nigerians have, that they are willing to die for Jesus. As I have always said, if you aren’t willing to live for Jesus, you will never be willing to die for Him.
Matthew 5:10 (NKJV): Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Revelation 2:10 (NLT) Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw some of you into prison to test you. You will suffer for ten days. But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life.
Isaiah 41:10 (NLV) Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will give you strength, and for sure I will help you. Yes, I will hold you up with My right hand that is right and good.
James 1:12 (NIV) Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
John 15:18 (NLT) If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.
