A few years ago, during a previous election cycle, I got into a discussion with a good friend about, what else, but politics. She told me she had switched her party affiliation from Republican to Democrat. I made the comment to her, “The Democrats are pro-choice.” She replied, “I know, but that’s not the only thing I care about.”
To be honest, I was shocked. In my mind, what is more important than protecting the unborn child?
While I still consider her a good friend, we’ve drifted apart and rarely connect anymore. I’m not saying it’s because of this, but divisive political views do impact friendships. Sometimes friendships are costly, but God’s price to make us His own cost Him the life of His Son.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”
I want to make a couple of generalizations. The accuser is Satan (Revelation 12:10). If you or someone you know has had an abortion, there is no condemnation in Christ (Romans 8:1). I know for a fact that some women have unwittingly had an abortion without giving consent. Others have had an abortion because they did not understand the gravity of what they were doing. Whether it was intentional or unintentional, abortion is not the unpardonable sin. Ask God to forgive you and live in forgiveness.
Claim 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins, and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
I cringe when I see pro-choice activists holding up signs that say, “My body, my choice.” According to Scripture, our bodies are not ours. They belong to God (1 Cor 6:19 NIV): “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.”
When I went through my cancer treatment for breast cancer, the doctor recommended that I receive chemotherapy because I had so many positive lymph nodes. I struggled with choosing to follow the recommended protocol, not because it’s a difficult treatment to endure, but because I hated the thought of corrupting my body with poison that I knew housed the Holy Spirit. It was such an issue for me that I sought prayer from the elders at my church before I made my final decision to follow the recommended protocol.
I am now a nine-year cancer survivor, and I thank God for giving me these extra years to write more books and hopefully represent Him in a way that is acceptable and pleasing to Him (Psalm 19:14).

Sira’s Annual Equip for Life Community WalkLast month, some friends and I participated in Sira’s Annual Equip for Life Community Walk here in Gainesville, Florida. I have supported Sira for many years in their mission to help women navigate those waters who are facing unexpected pregnancies, and help them explore all the options, including adoption.
Sira is pro-life and provides resources for women who need help spiritually, emotionally, mentally, practically, and financially. I am thankful for the work they do and for all the volunteers who are making a difference in our community. Their services are glorifying God here in Gainesville, where many young people attend the University of Florida and Santa Fe State College.

Worldwide, over the last four years, 292 million abortions have taken place. Each year in the United States, approximately 1.1 million abortions are “executed.” When you compare that to the “execution” of over six million Jews from 1941-1945, the numbers are numbing. More than that, they are heartbreaking.
Downtown Hanoi, where I spent almost a monthI am the mother of two adopted international children. One of them is from Vietnam. The year I adopted her, Vietnam had the highest abortion rate of any country in the world. I named her Joy, a name befitting her, and I will never forget that she could have been a statistic and not my daughter. I met her birthmother in Vietnam, and I can tell you, she was poor, needy, and struggling. Even through her tears, she chose life for her daughter, and today Joy is a married woman of God, seeking God’s will for her life. She has been a blessing to many, a sister to another adopted daughter, and “my joy.”
John 7:38 says, “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
God is the source of all life. And on the throne sits a divine human being in whose image we are created. Human life is precious. In times of difficulty, God is there. In times of pain, God is sufficient. In times of despair, God is our answer. Even with God’s forgiveness, regret is difficult to live with. This day, choose life. You will never regret it.

An inspiring commentary. I was touched by your initial refusal to allow chemo drugs into your body. I have never heard that sort of talk before. We have people in our church who have gone through cancer, and I doubt that a single one of them thought like that. They just blindly followed what the doctor told them. Your words have forced me to think about how we live.
